By The Bay and SCWO present “The Lives of Women in Singapore” Exhibition at ORQ and MBFC

With an eye to celebrating International Women’s Day in March, By the Bay collaborated with The Singapore Council of Women’s Organisation (SCWO) to host an exhibition “The Lives of Women in Singapore”.

The exhibition by The Singapore Women's Hall of Fame (SWHF), is itself an initiative of SCWO.

Background of SCWO and SWHF

SCWO was established over 40 years ago (in 1980) as the National Coordinating body of women's organisations in Singapore. Today, SCWO has more than 60 member organisations, representing over 600,000 women in Singapore.

Since its inception, the status of women in Singapore has advanced tremendously, but there is still a gender gap. Women continue to face discrimination, harassment, unequal pay and opportunities at the workplace.

SCWO aims to reduce, and eliminate, these inequalities by uniting member organisations and working toward the ideals of 'Equal Space, Equal Voice and Equal Worth'.

In 2014, SCWO launched the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame (SWHF) to recognise, document, celebrate and showcase Singapore’s most outstanding women across different fields, as well as to inspire women and allies, girls and boys to dare to dream.

“The Lives of Women in Singapore” exhibition

The exhibition is made up of two parts which showcase the journey women have taken as they contributed to and influenced Singapore from pre to post-independence.

The exhibition shares answers to two questions:

What was life like for women in pre-independence Singapore?

How have women progressed in Singapore since independence?

Additionally, the exhibition featured women who have been inducted into the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame. These are women who have made, or are making, an impact on our nation.

Through the exhibition, SWHF celebrates the achievements, tells the stories of awesome women and documents the myriad contributions of women to the shaping of Singapore.

Some names include the first woman President of Singapore, Halimah Yacob. Member of Parliament, Gan Siow Huang, and the first schoolgirl in Singapore to win the Queen’s Scholarship, Maggie Lim.

Fundraising until 8 March 2023: Empower Women and Girls, Achieve Gender Equality

By The Bay is raising funds for SCWO, in an effort to upkeep and enhance their infrastructure. This will allow them to continue supporting, protecting and educating the women and girls who are under their care.

100% of the funds raised will go to SCWO.
